Why Gum Disease Needs More Than a Regular Cleaning
If you’ve been told you have gum disease, you might wonder why you can’t just get a regular dental cleaning. After all, cleanings help keep your teeth healthy—so why not stick with the usual routine?
Here’s the simple answer: gum disease is more serious than everyday plaque buildup. It needs special care to stop it from getting worse.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) happens when bacteria build up under your gums. This causes swelling, bleeding, and sometimes even bone loss around your teeth. If it’s not treated, it can lead to loose teeth or tooth loss.
There are two main stages:
- Gingivitis: The early stage. Your gums may be red, puffy, or bleed when you brush.
- Periodontitis: The advanced stage. The bone that holds your teeth in place starts to break down.
Why Regular Cleanings Aren’t Enough
A regular cleaning (called a “prophylaxis”) only removes plaque and tartar from above the gumline. It’s great for healthy mouths, but it doesn’t reach the deep pockets caused by gum disease.
If you have gum disease, bacteria live below the gumline—where a regular cleaning can’t reach. That’s why we recommend a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing.
What a Deep Cleaning Does
A deep cleaning goes below the gumline to remove harmful bacteria and smooth the roots of your teeth. This helps your gums heal and reattach to your teeth. It’s the first step in stopping gum disease from getting worse.
